A powerful earthquake struck the India-Pakistan border on the
morning of 8 October 2005. It had a magnitude of 7.6 and was
felt severely in Pakistan, India and Afghanistan. This is one of
the strongest earthquakes in this general area since 1885,
similar in intensity to the famous 1906 San Francisco
earthquake. The quake caused widespread panic over a large part
of the Indian Sub-continent sending frightened people fleeing
outdoors in terror.
Earthquake was centred 4.0 kms SE of Ghori, PAK,
10.7 kms NNE of Muzaffarabad, PAK
32.9 kms ENE of Manshera (N.W.F.P.), Pakistan,
60.9 kms NW of Uri (Jammu & Kashmir), India,
90.2 kms NNE of Islamabad (N.C.T.), Pakistan,
123 kms WNW of Srinagar (Jammu & Kashmir), India,
326 kms NNW of Lahore (Punjab), Pakistan,
740 kms NW of Delhi (N.C.R.), India.
The earthquake was felt for several minutes in Pakistan,
northern India and in Afghanistan. Several buildings have
collapsed in P.A.K., northern Pakistan and in Jammu & Kashmir
state in India. Heaviest damage is believed to have occurred in
the vicinity of the towns of Muzaffarabad where entire villages
were destroyed. Landslides and rock falls have wiped out several
mountainous roads in the region. In the Pakistani capital,
Islamabad a multi storied apartment complex collapsed. Building
collapses were also reported from Gujrat City, Gurjanwala and
Lahore farther south in the Punjab. Elsewhere in Pakistan the
earthquake was felt at Chakwal, Faisalabad, Jhang, Sargodha and
as far as Quetta. Tremors were also felt at Gilgit and Skardu.
In adjoining parts of India, in the state of Jammu & Kashmir,
towns along the Line of Control are badly affected. Much of the
town of Uri is said to have been destroyed. Heavy damage is also
known to have occurred in the Pir Panjal Mountains along the
western edge of the Kashmir Valley. Buildings also collapsed in
Anantnag, Baramula, Kupwara, Jammu and Srinagar. Several Indian
soldiers are also thought to have died when a bunker collapsed
in the Baramula and Kupwara districts. The TV tower on the top
of the Shankaracharya Hill in Srinagar was also damaged. Tremors
were also felt at Vaisho Devi shrine in the state. Landslides
have blocked several highways including the Srinagar-Jammu &
Srinagar-Muzaffarabad highway.
Strong tremors rocked the states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal
Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Delhi sending many people running
outdoors. In Punjab, one person was killed in a house collapse
in Shahpur Jajan village in Gurdaspur district. Buildings were
also damaged in other parts of Punjab including in the city of
Amritsar where a fire broke out due to fallen power lines. In
Chandigarh city tremors sent people running outdoors and caused
minor cracks in some buildings. Shocks were also felt at
Bathinda, Gurdaspur, Ferozepur, Ludhiana, Faridkot, Sangrur,
Moga and Jallandhar. Rockfalls were also reported in Himachal
Pradesh including from Dharamsala and Shimla. In Delhi, tremors
shook buildings and furniture for several minutes causing
momentary panic and forcing evacuations of some buildings. In
western Uttar Pradesh, its effects were felt at Ghaziabad,
Meerut, Rampur, Roorkee and Saharanpur while at Dehradun in
Uttaranchal it shook houses and large trees sending people
running outdoors.
To the south, the
earthquake was felt in many parts of Rajasthan including the
cities of Jaipur and Jodhpur. The farthest the earthquake was
felt was Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, Ahmedabad, Godhra &
Vadodara in Gujarat and Indore in Madhya Pradesh. Tremors were
also felt in Kabul, Afghanistan and in parts of Central Asia.
At Kabul airport, aircraft were seen rocking to and fro during
the quake. At least one person was killed in a wall collapse
in Afghanistan.
Aftershocks and other earthquakes : There have been many
secondary earthquakes in the region. 147 aftershocks were
registered after the initial massive quake that hit at 9:20
am, one of which had a magnitude of 6.2 (a tremor of magnitude
6 is rated as a "strong" earthquake). Another 24 occurred with
a magnitude greater than 5 during 2 days after the original
earthquake.
