Green Defenders of Kashmir, partnership formed with national and international organizations, to motivate the public to prevent cruelty to forests and to promote floral welfare and conservation policies that advance the well being of both forests and people. The team comprises of prominent environmental scientists and individuals from across the State who have made significant efforts to protect forests of Kashmir. Small, but effective, seeking to prevent further destruction of Kashmir's forests and floral diversity and level the playing field by infusing resources and broad-based support into campaigns to protect forests, medicinal plants, endemic floral species, and forest rehabilitation.

Forests are at the strategic core of the management of natural resources, and health and well being of all life in this region. The status of water resources, moisture regimen and land use patterns are critically dependent upon the health of the forests. Since our inception, Green Defenders Kashmir has sought to work with local communities on village commons.

In terms of impact, over 6 million saplings have been planted in about 40 square kilometres of degraded forest in 45 villages. Villagers are involved, and encouraged to take ownership of every stage of this programme. Tree seedlings, mostly of local fodder and fuel species, selected by the local community are grown. Nurseries are small in size, so as to maximise local involvement, and are usually run by women. Voluntary labour is encouraged, both to reduce costs and more importantly to increase the feeling of local ownership.

Every effort is made so that the forest is perceived as a local asset - to be managed by and for the local community.

Fragile Kashmir Let the Fact Speaks Itself

The recorded forest area in the State occupies only 20182 sq. km i.e 19.95 % of its 222235 sq. km geographical area. As per the National Forest Policy, 1988, hilly regions like that of Jammu & Kashmir should aim at a forest cover of 66 % against the prescription of 33 % suggested in NFP for the plain regions of the country. Further, about 46 % of the reported cover is between crown density of 10- 40 % , leaving only about 11000 sq km of good forest with crown density of more than 40 % .The State has already lost more than 13 per cent of its forest area in the last four decades. Going by official figures, on an average, the State has lost 74.37 sq.km. of its forest area every year in the last 40 years.
