This Stastical data is brought to you by WHED. WHED is a plan programme of the esro & International Environmental Database Management [ IEDM ]. Environmental data's are presently held unevenly across the State of Jammu & Kashmir in different , often incompatible formats. Information based on these data's is required by the decision makers and other users for different purpose , such as protected area management , environmental assessment , land use planning and development , awareness raising , education , research and prioritization of conservation actions .

Although many institutions collect data useful for biodiversity conservation , they are rarely made accessible in reasonable time or in the formats which the users require , particularly if the data transcend institutional holdings. This is because such data are normally collected for internal use by the institutions concerned , and there is little awareness of the need to build up essential data assets for wider use.

In order to address the above gap and to provide scientific and management information for biodiversity conservation in Kashmir . A key activity taken up by Environment Services and Research Organization in the pursuit of its objectives is the preparation of biodiversity profiles of the state of Jammu & Kashmir.

The approach is to put together available information on various aspects of biodiversity in publications, reports, research papers, etc. for ease of reference and to promote the use of this information by policy makers, conservationists, concerned individuals and organization in their respective context.

WHED is a decentralised system using the distributed network of data bases to ensure integration of International efforts in environmental information collection, storage, retrieval and dissemination to all concerned including policy planners, decision makers, research workers and the public.

Long-term objectives are to build up a repository and dissemination Centre in Environment Science and Engineering; To gear up the modern technologies of information acquisition, processing, storage, retrieval and dissemination of environmental information; To support and promote research, development and innovation in environmental information technology.

Short-term objective are to provide International environmental information service relevant to present needs and capable of development to meet the future needs of the users, originators, processors and disseminators of information; To build up storage, retrieval and dissemination capabilities, with the ultimate objectives of disseminating information speedily to the users; To promote national and international co-operation and liaison for exchange of environment related information; To promote, support and assist education and personal training programmes designed to enhance environmental information processing and utilization capabilities; To promote exchange of information amongst developing countries
